My Buddy: A Journey of Love and Loyalty in NYC

December 13, 2013, is a day I will always remember. On this day, my son gifted me one of the greatest presents for Christmas: a puppy. As I reflect on the previous gifts he had given me, I am grateful for the thought behind them, even if some left me wondering what he was thinking. But this gift was different; it was a gift that keeps on giving.

The puppy, roughly eight weeks old, initially left me unsure of how to react. However, he quickly grew on me as he crawled into my lap and nuzzled into sleep. This little one was a combination of American Bulldog and Pitbull. Despite hearing negative things about owning a Pitbull, I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt, starting with his name. Naming my dog felt as significant as naming a child. I wanted a name that embodied strength and responsibility, so I chose to call him “My Buddy.” To me, this name signifies a special bond; it means he will always be there for me, and I will always be there for him. Thus, our journey together began.

Living in New York City, I realized I needed to learn about his lineage. Through my research, I discovered that these two breeds were highly compatible. Both share a stocky build, broad head, strong jaw, and powerful neck. Their temperaments reveal loyalty and protectiveness, alongside gentleness and affection, especially with children. The American Bulldog is intelligent and eager to please but can be stubborn without proper training. I understood that the training we instill in our dogs as puppies will dictate their lifestyle and how they socialize with others.

A dog that possesses the characteristics of both an American Bulldog and a Pitbull is often referred to as an American Bully. This distinct breed combines traits from both parent breeds, resulting in a dog that embodies loyalty and proper training. Living in NYC, I was determined to provide My Buddy with the best training possible to dispel the negative perceptions surrounding these breeds. With the right guidance, My Buddy could become a well-mannered companion, demonstrating the loyalty and affection that both American Bulldogs and Pitbulls are known for breaking down all the stereotypes.

Proper training not only shapes behavior but also fosters a deeper bond between us. As I committed to this journey, I knew my efforts would help calm the gossip about the negative behaviors often attributed to these dogs. With patience and love, My Buddy would grow into the loyal friend I envisioned. Together, we would show the world that a dog’s true nature shines through responsible care and understanding.

Training My Buddy took more effort than usual because he was deaf. I was determined to make it work. You might think I would have returned him to the seller, which could have resulted in a tragic fate. But is that what we do to our loved ones who face challenges? Yes, My Buddy had a hurdle, but like anything else, we can overcome it. I trained him using sign language and repeated commands, and together, we formed a remarkable team.

I often took My Buddy to dog-friendly areas around NYC, like Prospect Park and Central Park, where he could socialize with other dogs and people. His playful demeanor and eagerness to please reminded us all that a dog’s behavior is largely influenced by its upbringing. One day while enjoying a stroll in Tompkins Square Park, My Buddy surprised me by barking at a worker in the yard next door, standing protectively between me and the worker. It was a rare moment, showcasing his loyalty and instincts.

As My Buddy aged, his gentle spirit and loving nature remained constant. His presence filled our home with warmth and happiness. On July 1, 2023, My Buddy passed away due to complications that come with old age. While I mourned his loss, I felt content knowing that I provided him with the best life I could offer. He was rightfully named because he truly was My Buddy.

Reflecting on our journey together, I realized that My Buddy taught me invaluable lessons about love, resilience, and the importance of looking beyond surface challenges. He showed me that every dog, regardless of their circumstances, has the potential to be a beloved companion. Our bond transcended words, rooted in understanding and trust.

As I move forward, I carry his memory with me, cherishing the joy and love he brought into my life. My Buddy will always remain not just a part of my past, but a cherished part of my heart.
