City Life with My Best Pal |
| Mornings in Manhattan hit different, especially with Duke. My boy, a big pitbull mix, acts like he owns the sidewalks down on the Lower East Side. We're out before the tourist rush, dodging delivery bikes, getting our coffee on Orchard Street. He sniffs every pole, every tree, every fire hydrant. It's his world, I'm just holding the leash. Some folks still cross the street when they see him, you know? Big dog, strong jaw. But then someone else stops, asks to pet him, sees he's just a big softie, a goofball who thinks squirrels are tiny, taunting gods. That's NYC for you – two sides to every coin, always. I remember that summer, 2023, when the sky turned all weird, orange and hazy from the wildfires way up north. Smelled like a bonfire every time you stepped outside. Everyone was panicking, talking about air quality. Duke just looked up at me, blinked, like "what's new, boss?" We had to cut our walks short, keep him inside more than usual. He hated it. I hated it for him. He's an outdoor dog, even if he's a city dog. Now it's 2026. Same old grind. Subway to my job downtown. The one thing that keeps me sane is knowing Duke’s okay. That Pet Camera with Treat Dispenser I got? Best money I ever spent. I can check on him from my desk, see him curled up, snoring. Sometimes he’s by the door, just waiting. I hit the button, a treat pops out. It’s a small thing, but it makes me feel like I’m still there with him. We hit Tompkins Square Park most afternoons. He goes wild, chasing pigeons, trying to make friends with every dog, big or small. He pulls me down Avenue B like he's on a mission. The city never sleeps, they say, and neither does Duke when he's out. He’s my anchor, really. All the sirens, the noise, the constant rush. Then I come home, he gives me that big, goofy grin, and curls up next to me. Makes all the concrete and chaos worth it. He's my best pal, my shadow, my reason to keep hustling. This city's tough, but with him, it’s home. |
