City Pups & Smoke Haze: A Shiba's Queens Life

Another morning, another battle getting Kiko, my Shiba, past the bodega on Ditmars. That guy, Tony, always has a fresh delivery, and Kiko acts like the scent of those bagels is a personal insult if we don't stop. He's a real stubborn one, my Kiko. We do the same loop every day, down to Astoria Park, past the skate park where those kids are always doing flips even at 7 AM. The sun's barely up, but the city's already buzzing. That's Queens for ya, never sleeps. You know, sometimes I look at Kiko, trotting along, tail curled just so, and I remember that crazy summer a couple years back, 2023 it was. The sky was all orange, like something out of a bad movie, from those fires way up north. The air smelled like a campfire had exploded right over Roosevelt Avenue. Folks were wearing masks again, not for the virus this time, but just to breathe. It was wild. Kiko hated it. He’d barely go outside, just sniffed around like the whole world had gone wrong. We had to cut our walks short, just quick dashes around the block near my place on 30th Avenue, before the smoke got too thick. Those were tough days, keeping him entertained indoors. That’s when I finally caved and bought that Automatic Laser Pet Toy Interactive thing. Best money I ever spent, honestly. Kept him chasing that little red dot for hours, burning off some of that Shiba energy when we couldn't properly hit the park. Saved my sanity, probably. Today, though, the air's crisp. You can see the Manhattan skyline clear as day from the waterfront, even with the usual haze. Kiko’s pulling me towards the dog run, all excited. There's a new poodle puppy there, all fluff and no bark. Kiko, being the tough guy he thinks he is, will probably just give him a quick, bored sniff. That’s his way. He's seen it all, this city dog. From the wildest skies to the busiest streets. He's a Queens lifer, through and through, just like me. And even with all the noise, the smells, the constant hustle, I wouldn't trade our morning walks for anything. It’s our time, our routine, our slice of this wild, beautiful, messed-up city.
