My Brooklyn Life, One Schnauzer Step at a Time

Another morning, same routine. Alarm screaming at 6 AM, rain or shine. Or, hell, snow. Remember that blizzard in '23? That was a nightmare for everyone, especially for folks with dogs. I still had to drag old Rocco out, bundled him up like a tiny arctic explorer. He's a Schnauzer, tough little dude, but even he looked at me like, 'Really, boss?' Today? Just grey. A typical Brooklyn January. We're on our way to Prospect Park. The path near Grand Army Plaza is usually busy, but this early, it's just us and a few other crazy people with their pups. Rocco sniffs every single tree trunk, every lamp post, like it's a new edition of the New York Times. His whole world is smell. Sometimes I just let him take his time, even if it means I'm freezing my butt off. Worth it for that wagging tail. He's getting older, you know? Seven this year. Still got that puppy bounce sometimes, especially when he sees a squirrel. But I gotta watch him more now. Can't let him overdo it, not with those joints. Back home, it’s all about comfort. Got that new Smart Feeder with App Control setup a few months back. Best decision, seriously. Means I can sleep in a little on my days off, or if I'm stuck late at the shop down on Flatbush Ave, I know he’s still getting his meals right on time. No more rushing home, panicking. That thing’s a lifesaver. Keeps his schedule steady, too. Last summer was a beast, those weeks where it felt like the whole city was melting. Every day was 90+, and the humidity just choked you. Walking Rocco then felt like a mission. Had to go out at dawn, or wait till after sunset, just to keep him from overheating. That heat was no joke. People were dropping. Made me appreciate these chilly mornings, even with the grey skies. We hit our usual spot by the dog run, Rocco does his business, chases a ball for five minutes, then it’s time to head back. He knows the drill. Walks with a little more pep on the way home, probably dreaming of that breakfast waiting for him. Me? I'm just looking forward to a hot coffee and not having to wear three layers. It's a life, this city. Not always easy, but with Rocco, it's always interesting. And yeah, I wouldn't trade it for anything.
