My Schnauzer, Max, and the Wild Ride of Staten Island Life

It’s not always easy with Max, my little Schnauzer. He’s got more opinions than a whole barbershop on Bay Street. We were out today, heading towards St. George, just trying to get some fresh air. The sun was finally out, felt good on my face. Made me think back to that summer, 2023, when the sky turned orange. Remember that? Wildfire smoke, they called it. You couldn’t see the Verrazzano for days. Felt like the end of the world, no joke. Max was a mess then, eyes watering, barking at shadows even more than usual. We barely left the apartment, just quick runs around the block near Victory Boulevard. He hated being cooped up, but what could you do? I remember pulling out his Orthopedic Memory Foam Urban Travel Crate Mattress, just so he had a comfy spot in his crate, a safe zone, when things felt all wrong outside. He’d curl up on it, snuggled in, like it was his little bunker from the weird orange sky. Today was better. We walked all the way past Tompkinsville Park, Max sniffing every single blade of grass like it held the secrets to the universe. Little guy still has that bounce, even with his graying muzzle. Sometimes I wonder what he remembers. Does he remember the smoke, the way the air tasted? Or just the good stuff, the treats, the belly rubs, the way I always pretend to throw the ball but don’t, just to watch him jump? That’s what I try to give him, the good stuff. A good walk, good food, and a soft spot to land. This city, Staten Island especially, it’s got its quirks. The ferry horns, the endless traffic on Hylan Boulevard, the way the wind whips off the water near the ferry terminal. It’s home, though. And Max, he’s my home base. He slows me down, makes me notice the little things, like a squirrel daring him from a tree on a quiet side street in Stapleton. We're a team, me and my stubborn little Schnauzer. We’ve seen some crazy stuff, and we’ll see more, I bet. But as long as he’s got that mattress, and I got him, we’re good.
