My Boy, My Block, My Rotti |
| Brutus is a big boy. A Rottweiler. Some folks see him coming and cross the street. They don't know him. He's a big softie, mostly. But you gotta carry yourself a certain way, especially up here in the Bronx. We live just off the Grand Concourse, near 183rd Street. Every morning, early, we hit the pavement. Before the sun gets too loud and the buses start roaring like sleepy dragons. His paws know every crack in the sidewalk from here to Fordham Road. We pass the old places, the new spots trying to make it. He sniffs every pole, every bush. It’s his morning news, I guess. When we get to the bigger green spaces, maybe towards Crotona Park if we’re feeling ambitious, he gets to run a bit. Not too much, Rotties got energy, but they also got a lot of weight to carry. I remember that summer, two years back. The one where the whole city felt like an oven. Not just hot, but *stuck*. Air so thick and heavy, you could almost chew it. Every news report was about the "heat dome" sitting on us. Brutus almost melted. His big black fur coat, man, it was rough. I had to walk him real early, before dawn, and then again real late, after the streetlights came on strong. Even then, the asphalt near the 170th Street station was radiating heat like a furnace. He’d be panting, tongue hanging out like a pink tie. That’s when I finally splurged on that Pet Camera with Treat Dispenser. Best money I ever spent, honestly. I could check on him from work, toss him a biscuit if he looked bored or too hot. Just seeing him cool and chilling on the tile floor made me feel better. We've seen it all, Brutus and me. From the vendors shouting their deals on Arthur Avenue to the kids playing stickball in the street. Sirens screaming past, music blasting from windows. This city, it never sleeps. And neither does Brutus's bladder, it seems. He’s more than a dog. He’s my shadow, my muscle, my best friend. Life in the Bronx ain't always easy, but with Brutus by my side, we figure it out. Always. |
