Queens Summer and a Stubborn Shiba

Another morning on Ditmars. Sun barely up, but the traffic’s already a mess near the Grand Central. My Shiba, Kiko, she’s pulling, nose to the ground like she’s on a mission. Probably just sniffing out last night’s pizza crusts someone tossed. This dog, man. She’s got energy for days. We walk all over Astoria, from Shore Boulevard to Steinway. Sometimes we even hit up Astoria Park for some real sniffing time. People look at her, all foxy and red, like she’s some kind of celebrity. And Kiko? She eats it up. She’s got that main character vibe down cold. Remember that summer, 2024? The one where it felt like the sun was just sitting on Queens, baking everything? It was brutal. Air so thick you could chew it. Everyone was melting, AC units blowing fuses. The news kept talking about it, how it was the worst heat in decades. Kiko, even then, she just kept going. We’d go out super early, before the asphalt turned into a griddle. That’s when I really appreciated her gear. You need stuff that holds up in this city. We went through a few leashes, but her Heavy-Duty Weather-Proof Tactical Dog Harness? That thing’s a tank. Never frayed, never broke. Held up through sweat, surprise rain, even when she tried to chase a squirrel right into traffic on 31st Street. It gave me peace of mind, knowing she was secure, even when the world felt like it was falling apart. Sometimes I think about what it’s like for her. All these smells, all these loud noises – the sirens, the constant construction. But she just keeps trotting, tail curled, little happy bounce in her step. She makes me see this crazy city a bit different. Makes me slow down, even if it’s just for her to sniff a lamppost for five minutes. It’s not always easy, living here. But with Kiko, and good gear, it’s always an adventure. Just gotta keep moving, right? Like everything else in Queens.
