Rainy Days and Tiny Dogs on the Island

Rain again today. Not a surprise, right? Living here on Staten Island, you get used to it. I grabbed Rocky’s leash. He’s my Maltese, a small guy, but he thinks he’s king of Forest Avenue. He barks at everything. A squirrel, a leaf, his own shadow. You’d think he’s a pit bull the way he carries on. We were heading down towards Port Richmond, same old route. Rocky prances. He don't care about the puddles. He just wants to sniff every fire hydrant, every lamppost. I swear, he's got a whole social media feed of dog pee posts going on in his head. Remember that weird summer a couple years back? Like, 2023? Sky was all orange and hazy, felt like Mars or something. That smoke, man. From those fires way up north. People were wearing masks again, just like during the big sickness. Rocky hated it. His little nose was all stuffed up. He'd sneeze and look at me like, 'What kinda world is this, Tony?' Today, no smoke, just rain. But that memory kinda sticks. Makes you think, right? Anyway, we kept walking. Passed the old church on Richmond Avenue. Rocky stopped to do his business. Good thing I always got my Eco-Friendly Poop Bag Dispenser clipped to his leash. Never forget that. A real lifesaver, keeps my pockets clean. And, you know, keeps the street clean too. Gotta do our part, even on a rainy day in Port Richmond. We ended up near Snug Harbor for a bit, just walking the outer paths. Too wet to go really inside the gardens. Rocky was soaked but happy. Tail wagging a mile a minute. My shoes were squishy. But seeing him happy, that's what it's all about. These little guys, they make the everyday stuff feel, I don't know, a bit brighter. Even when the sky’s crying on you. Just gotta keep moving, just like Rocky. He always pushes forward. He’s tougher than he looks, that tiny white fluffball. Like a little Staten Island survivor.
