Tank and the BX Grind

Yo, another morning, another walk. Tank, my Frenchie, he’s already tugging the leash like he’s got somewhere important to be. We’re out here, just past Belmont, heading towards Fordham Road, trying to get his business done before the real craziness starts. Sidewalks still kinda quiet, but you can feel it building. The smell of fresh bread from the bakeries mixing with exhaust fumes. That's the Bronx for you. Tank, he’s a good dog, but man, he gets spooked sometimes. A fire truck wails down Arthur Avenue, or some dude revs his souped-up Honda too loud, and Tank freezes. His ears go flat. His little body tenses up. I actually looked into one of those Calming Anxiety Vest for Dogs. Thought it might help him chill out a bit, you know? The city can be a lot, even for us. Especially for a little guy like him. I remember that summer, maybe two, three years back, 2023, I think? When that heatwave hit. Man, it wasn't just hot, it was *mean*. The kind of heat that made the asphalt shimmer like a mirage on Webster Avenue. We couldn't even walk him properly for weeks. Had to do quick trips out, then back into the AC. His little paws would get too hot. He'd just lay there, panting, looking miserable. It felt like the whole city was holding its breath, waiting for it to break. Every morning, I'd check the news for the temps, dreading another scorcher. Folks were melting on the subway platforms, and here I was, worried about my dog's pads. But that’s what you do, right? Your pet, they're family. Now, even when it’s just regular warm, I still check the ground with my hand. Old habits die hard. We walk past Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, then head down towards Crotona Avenue for a bit, where there’s a little more shade. Tank sniffs every lamppost like it’s a breaking news report. He's got that snorting sound going, all Frenchie, all business. Sometimes, I just stop, watch him, and think about how much this little guy changed everything. Made me slow down. Made me notice things. The cracks in the pavement, the graffiti art changing every week, the way the light hits the brick on Grand Concourse at sunrise. It's a tough place, the Bronx, but it's home. And Tank, he’s right there with me, making it feel even more like home. Even if he needs a vest sometimes to handle the noise.
