Benny and the Astoria Heat

Man, Benny, my Beagle, he’s something else. Wakes me up every morning before the sun even thinks about it. Not with a bark, usually, more like a whimper that gets louder and louder until I just gotta get up. Today was no different. We hit the street, down 30th Avenue towards Astoria Park. He’s pulling, nose to the ground, sniffing every single lamppost like it’s got the secret to the universe. We passed the old Othello Deli, smells of bacon, eggs, coffee mixing with the usual city funk. Benny pulls harder. He loves to drag me past the skate park, right near the water. Gets all excited, chasing after squirrels that know exactly how to mess with him. Sometimes I just let him go, long leash stretched out, while I try to snag a quick photo of the Manhattan skyline from the park. It's still a view that gets me, even after all these years. Remember that crazy heatwave two summers ago? Summer of '24, I think it was. Felt like the pavement was melting. Benny, bless his heart, he still wanted his walkies, but we had to stick to the shadier side streets, darting from tree to tree, running for the AC. Even then, his tongue was dragging, and I was sweating buckets just trying to keep him hydrated. We'd cut through Ditmars Boulevard, just trying to find some cool air. That summer was rough. He’s not a big dog, Benny, but he's got energy for days. And when he finally crashes, he *crashes*. Like a furry little brick. He takes up half my bed, sprawled out, snoring away. I keep meaning to get him his own proper spot. I saw one of those Orthopedic Dog Bed for Large Breeds online the other day. I know, I know, Benny's a Beagle, not a Great Dane. But honestly, the way he sleeps, you'd think he ran a marathon every day. He deserves the best, even if it means he’s got a king-sized bed for a prince-sized pup. Maybe then I'd get my pillow back. We walked all the way past the Socrates Sculpture Park today, saw some new weird art. Benny, he just sniffed it and peed on a nearby tree. Always on brand. That's my Benny.
