My Hot Dog and the Concrete Jungle |
| Man, another scorcher. It’s only April, but the sun’s already beating down like it’s mid-July. Reminds me of that brutal August back in ’24, when the asphalt was literally soft around Tompkins Square Park. Couldn't walk even a block without feeling like your soles were melting. Good thing I got Bruno, my little Dachshund, on a good schedule now. He hates the heat. Bruno’s a character, you know? A real New Yorker. Thinks he owns the whole damn sidewalk on Avenue A. Every pigeon's an enemy. Every other dog? A rival for sniff-rights. He's tiny, but his bark? Loud enough to wake the dead on Delancey Street. People always stop, pointing, "Look at that little hot dog!" Yeah, I've heard it a million times. Still makes me smile though. He's got more personality than most folks I know in this city. We were out this morning, heading towards the East River Park. Had to dodge a bunch of delivery guys on electric bikes, per usual. One minute you're just enjoying the breeze off the water, the next you're doing a full-on juke move to avoid a head-on collision. Bruno, bless his little heart, just waddles along, oblivious. His nose is glued to the ground, searching for invisible treasures. He’s always got that intense look, like he’s about to solve the mysteries of the universe. Lately, I’ve been feeling a bit better about letting him explore a little more. Got him that new GPS Smart Tracker Collar with Health Metrics a few months back. Gives me peace of mind, you know? This city’s a maze, and a little guy like Bruno could get lost in a second, especially with all the construction noise and traffic. Plus, the health stats? Pretty cool to see how active he actually is, even if it’s just chasing squirrels in Stuyvesant Square Park. He's getting older, too, so knowing his heart rate and all that, it just helps. Today, we just did a quick loop. Down to Grand Street, then cut across to Rivington before heading back to the apartment. Even for a short walk, he's totally wiped. Little legs, big city, I guess. He's curled up on the couch now, snoring like a tiny old man. My little shadow. Wouldn't trade him for anything, even on the hottest, craziest New York day. |
